ADVICE FOR DESIGN STUDENTS | From Frank Chimero

Click here to read more from what Frank Chimero had to say in response to the question: What advice would you give to a graphic design student?

“Take things away until you cry. Accept most things, and reject most of your initial ideas. Print it out, chop it up, put it back together. When you’re aimlessly pushing things around on a computer screen, print it out and push it around in real space. Change contexts when you’re stuck. Draw wrong-handed and upside down and backwards. Find a good seat outside.”

Make sure you take wander around his site and read more from his blog, lots of Q&A’s and great tidbits (and I mean tidbits in the most respectful way).

UNDER CONSTRUCTION | Amsterdam

As the Amsterdam Central Station is under construction, temporary fences and walls have been put up. As you walk outside the station you can see part of the wooden barricades plastered with posters and illustrations. A colorful addition to the construction site, and a pleasant distraction among the detours and the chaotic rush:

Edits is a temporary exhibition at the Amsterdam Central Station. Designers and illustrators take inspiration from the museums of Amsterdam, and give a fresh view on cultural institutions. Edits welcomes you to the city – where its museums and the energy of its young creatives come together.

ABC URBAN ARTS FESTIVAL | Amsterdam

Thought I’d share some of the events I plan on checking out while I’m in the city, so if you happen to be in Amsterdam, don’t miss the ABC Urban Art Festival 2010:

On Saturday June 26 2010, from 1pm to 6pm, the large square in front of  The American Book Center Amsterdam will be transformed into an outdoor atelier, with artists showing and creating work on-site for the public to enjoy.

The line-up will include Pia Jane Bijkerk, who will be signing her latest book Amsterdam: Made by Hand; illustrator Kate Bingaman-Burt, who has worked on projects such as Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft and Design and has drawn for IDEO, HandMade Magazine and more; Dutch artist Fake who will be painting a fresh stencil for the festival; as well as many more artists, designers and ‘creatives’ who will be sharing their work and expertise across the square. It will be a full day of workshops and discussions covering subjects such as design, crafts, illustration and practical crossovers between the areas.

For more info and registration go here, and watch the workshop promo after the jump…

STUFF WE LINK

To click through if the clouds come back, here are a few links we like:

• Follow the illustrations of a man’s daily wardrobe at Wear Today. That man being, Google Creative Lab’s Ed Kim.

• For a completely different style of daily drawings, check out A Drawing A Day by Lauren Nassef.

• And since there’s a ‘daily’ theme going on here… one of my new favorite blogs with constant inspiration: YAY!EVERYDAY

• Wicked designs, patterns and illustrations by Vikki Wiercinski, aka veekee (we especially love the ‘etc’ section). Take a look at her site and blog, as well as some sweet agendas at her Etsy shop.
PS. You might remember seeing a print by Veekee in Skewed 06’s Where Are You From poster show feature.

Make Art History calls for support and debates on the issues and effects of the BC budget cuts to our Cultural Sector. Join them on Facebook, as well as at their up coming public symposium, Now What?

• Last but not least, if you haven’t downloaded yet, do it now! Issue Number Ten is packed with lots of local talent and amazing illustrations, paintings, photography and more.

Yes, lots shameless self-plugging.

Have a happy Friday and a great weekend everyone!
