SUMMER 2010 IN VAN CITY | The Cheaper Show No. 9

Just in time for fall, our perfectly logical posting strategy has had us step back into our supa’stylin extremely home crafted time machine, to bring you Skewed’s visit at the surreal Cheaper Show No.9.

Cheaper took place this past June (25th to be exact) and tore Vancouver a new one. Two hundred artists exhibited over four hundred pieces of work, every single one sold for two hundred bucks a pop. Since the show is only six hours long, hungry hungry art collectors, young things and other human looking types lined up and down the streets of G-town central to ensure having a go at purchasing that piece they’ve been dreaming about. Beside our flickr coverage of the show and its preview day, which the organizers were so lovely to let us be a part of, here are some wise words from the brain and the brawn responsible for masterminding this giant effort, alongside their small army of volunteers. Their names: (the) Graeme Berglund and Steve Rio.  If you are uninspired after reading this, we can no longer help, nor prescribe electroshock therapy on polka-dotted post-its. Word up, word out.

SWARM 11 | 2010

We’re loving the dynamically generating online festival guide for this year’s SWARM 11, making direct use of sites like Twitter and Google Maps.

Following some basic guidelines, galleries and venue participants can ‘tag’ themselves automatically into SWARM’s online listings. Similar to pulling fan Twitter posts using a #SWARM11 tag, the website pulls feeds with another tag specifically into the list of events and generates venue maps.

Swarm is an annual festival of artist run culture organized by the Pacific Association of Artist Run Centres.
Don’t miss it this year: Thursday September 9th and Friday September 10th, 2010.

OH THE HUMANITY AND OTHER GOOD INTENTIONS

“Part of the 2010 Vancouver Fringe Festival, Oh the Humanity! And Other Good Intentions is the Canadian premiere of award winning Will Eno’s latest work. Featuring several Alumni from the University of British Columbia’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program, this series of 5 short plays about the trials of humanity is sure to make you laugh, and then wonder why you’re laughing.”

Directed by Becky Shrimpton, featuring Maryanne Renzetti and Brad Duffy, the show starts Thursday 9 September and goes on until Sunday 19 September 2010, at Carousel Large Studio (1412 Cartwright Street).

PLUK DE NACHT | Open Air Film Festival Amsterdam

Out in the open air, rain or shine, the film must show when the sun goes down. Last night was my second night at the Pluk de Nacht (‘Seize the Night’) film festival, and it won’t be my last. The open space was jam packed with people in lawn chairs, benches, make shift seating and a fleet of late comers were standing all around, all there for the screening of This American Life TV stories.

Another must see film I caught at the festival is the clay-mated feature Mary and Max. A tale about an unlikely pen-friendship between two different people, based on a true story.

Along side the big screen, the festival site has been hosting Artist in Focus, installations, workshops and more, for the full list click here.
