TIS THE SEASON | Film, Theatre and Crafts

The Arts Club Theatre Company’s It’s a Wonderful Life, runs until Jan. 2 but check it out this week and beat the holiday rush. Based on the classic Christmas film, this story promises to be a real tear-jerker.

The European Union Film Festival is in full swing. The festival runs until Dec. 9, 2010. Enjoy the chance to be transported to Europe for the day.

And speaking of all things European, make sure to check out the Vancouver Christmas Market. This year a traditional German Christmas Market comes to Vancouver for the first time. Lots of food and merchadise to browse, from wooden carvings to nutcrackers. If this doesn’t get you into the Christmas spirit, nothing else will. And make sure to order the hot spiced wine… your welcome.

‘Tis the season for craft fairs. From Dec. 9 – 12, The One of a Kind Show will be on at the New Vancouver Convention Centre. Focusing on homegrown talent, the craft show brings innovative artists, craftspeople, and designers together sharing their unique creations. Check out the vast selection and on-site perks for “a personal shopping experience like no other.”

If that doesn’t settle your search for handmade gifts, shop online at Poppytalk Handmade’s Holiday Market, curated by the Canadian design blog, Poppytalk.

VANCOUVER | Film Festivals

The Vancouver Asian Film Festival may have come to a close this weekend, but lucky for us film buffs, today marks the beginning of two more film festivals in Vancouver.

The Vancouver Serbian FilmFest runs from Nov. 9-12, 2010, while the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival is showing films from Nov. 9-18, 2010.

For those who still can’t get enough, the Vancouver DSLR Film Festival will be running this weekend, Nov. 13 & 14, at the Pacific Cinematheque, and the Amnesty International Film Festival will run next week from Nov. 18-21, 2010.

Another noteworthy festival this month is, Cinesonika, an international film and video festival celebrating the soundtrack. This first annual festival will run from Nov. 12-14 at the Westminster Savings Credit Union Theatre, Simon Fraser University Surrey Theatre.

Page 30 // Student Profile // Skewed Issue Number Eight //  Jan/Feb 2010

I decided to post two REVISIT features today, a submission from Skewed 03 – as we count up till the current issue – and the Student Profile from Skewed 08 (a big jump! Did you notice the issues are exactly a year apart?). I did this because, as October is quickly coming to an end, Caitlin’s short film will be screening at the Vancouver Asian Film Festival on November 6th!

Visiting Hours will be showing at the Praxis Theatre in the program Might Asian Shorts. Don’t miss the 14th Annual VAFF, running from Nov 4 – 7, 2010.

EMMYS | UBC Journalism

The students of the UBC Graduate School of Journalism can now add the prestigious title of Emmy Award winners to their resumes.

A few weeks ago, they won in the Outstanding Investigative Journalism category. In the process, they beat out heavy hitters like 60 Minutes, 48 Hours and Nightline.

Their documentary, Ghana: Digital Dumping Ground, offers a fascinating view on electronic waste and its effects on health, and raises concerns associated with security and sustainability.

The students made headlines when they purchased discarded hard drives in Ghana for $40 (Cdn) that contained sensitive information about multimillion-dollar contracts between Northrop Grumman, one of the largest military contractors in the U.S., and the Pentagon, Air Marshall Service and Department of Homeland Security.

YOUTUBE PLAY | Winners

The YouTube Play: A Biennial of Creative Video contest was held last month, with the intention of finding the most creative and innovative videos from all over the world and making them available to YouTube’s wide audience.

With more than 23,000 short video entries submitted, the difficult task was narrowing them down to a final list of 25, which included two Canadian entries.

I Met the Walrus, an entry from Toronto, adds animation to a John Lennon interview from 1969.

The top 25 entries, hand-picked by an international jury, were revealed and exhibited at the Guggenheim in New York on October 21, 2010. They will also be shown at the Guggenheim Museums in Bilbao, Venice and Berlin, as well as being featured on YouTube.

HOLLYWOOD THEATRE | 75th Anniversary

The Hollywood Theatre has been a Vancouver institution for 75 years now.

Canada’s oldest independently-owned and operated theatre will be celebrating its anniversary in style from October 22 to 24.

Each night there will be a food and wine event starting at 5:30pm with music and entertainment by actor Mackenzie Gray.

After the event, movies will be shown in the theatre’s signature double-billing fashion, starting with The American at 7:30pm and followed by the screening of Casablanca.

And while you’re there, don’t forget to soak in the classic cinema decor and imagine what this place was like during the 1930’s, back when black and white films graced the silver screen and price of admission was 20 cents…

INTERVIEW | Karoline Habt: Intern @ VIFF

The VIFF has borrowed Karoline Habt from her home in Leipzig, Germany to intern at this year’s festival. With the festival well under way, Karoline takes time from her busy schedule to sit down and chat VIFF with Skewed.

Two Indians TalkingLove Shines

Hi Karoline! So what attracted you to come from Germany to work for VIFF?
In Germany, I am studying cultural and media education. Included in my studies is an internship semester, which we can do anywhere in the world. All I knew was that I wanted to go to Vancouver, and that I wanted to work for a film festival. Et voila, VIFF was perfect for that!
