DESIGN NERD JAM 4.5 | Bringing Light to Darkness

On October 22, 2010, join the Vancouver Design Nerds for an evening of playing with photography, video, light generation and light design, based around the Design Nerd Jam topic, Light Play.

With your necessary equipment, along with a variety of lights, glowing and flashing bits and pieces, it will be a night of experimenting with photographic light-painting techniques in select locations in Vancouver. Don’t forget to BYOB!

LIGHT PAINTING | With iPads

Unlike any light painting we’ve seen so far!

Using specific movies playing on the surface of the iPad and moving it through exposures taken in dark environments, Dentsu London created this stop-frame animation. Different exposures and different movies combined the extruding 3D light forms to make this iPad light painting, Making Future Magic. If this doesn’t make sense, the intro of the video will.

FEATURE PROFILE | Sarah Kiran Mitchell

This week’s feature article on Anderson Ambroise was brought to you by our good friend, Sarah Kiran Mitchell. In between graduating last year from UBC and starting her MA in Publishing in the UK next week, Mitchell spent three and a half months volunteering with Hands on Disaster Response in Leogane, Haiti. After the devastation of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the project focused on rubble removal, reconstruction, art therapy and other projects.  Below are some of the photographs that show her inspiration while living with and working along side local and international volunteers and the Haitian community.

In Leogane she also met and worked with Keely Kernan and Corey Rateau, both who are involved with KOLAJ. Believing that art can be used to raise awareness, she wanted this to be her first article.

Have YOU seen The Lab Magazine yet? If not, then you’d better hurry up and get familiar with all 99 pages of it. Tons of great content for the soul, the spleen, the mind, and yes, the eyes. Flip, read, obsess. It’s all there. Following the plentiful Issues 00 and 01, Issue 02 is now out online and in stores.

Rashida Jones, Nicolas Stroller, Florence + The Machine and lots more goodies, waiting in there for your gentle gaze and occasionally trembling hands. Don’t leave them hanging!

And for some bonus info on the super troopers running this tight ship, check out a Skewed-style interview from our time machine, right here.

DOCUMENTING A MAN-MADE DISASTER | Kris Krug

In an attempt to shed more light on the devastation of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Kris Krüg has been more than active on the internet and at the scene. With a Flickr photostream full of sad but beautiful photographs, an informative blog post and constant updates, Krug covers an inspiring expedition of documentation.

Static Photography photographer Kris Krüg and TED event photographer Duncan Davidson, along with the help of Static Photography studio manager Danielle Sipple, will travel to the Gulf of Mexico in attempts to photograph what has yet to be photographed.”
